Impossible to replicate the power of camaraderie experienced during military service outside of an event like this. And then to do in a natural setting free of the constant noise of civilization - that is priceless.

As a solo-hiker, I found the training very helpful. There are often things we begin to take for granted that groups, particularly diverse groups that might include new hikers, might not be aware of.

I am not a veteran so this was a great opportunity for me to have insight into the feelings veterans have in their lives as civilians. I live on the small island of st. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. We are hoping to establish a site here and bring veterans down to see how wonderful life is in the US Virgin Islands

The manner in which all the instructors were exceptional in answering questions with details or examples. This allowed me to understand and focus better. Also when they pointed out a lacking in my example itinerary / planning exercise they did so in a manner which gave me a sense of encouragement and created and great learning environment.

The training was a great experience for me. As a civilian providing support for trauma and PTSD as well as immediate family of a disabled vet, this training was inspiring. I think it is great way to bring veterans together in a way that suits their needs and also heals them. I also gained experience and skills I hope to continue to use. I did hope to learn more in the first aid training but I don't feel like I learned enough to apply the skills.

I participated in the Sierra Club Military Outdoors training in McKinney Roughs in March. The training was excellent and I qualified as an outings leader. I also benefited from the breathing and meditative techniques. I met several vets from different branches of a wide age and experience range - we bonded across gender, ethnic, age and service lines - this gives me hope. The training was well structured and we all pitched in with cooking, serving and clean-up.

This course was very helpful because it is hands on and everyone gets a chance at it. Plus everyone has a chance to share there points of interests. Makes it a very educational event when people have to rely on each other. You remember what to do because you had to preform your part.

SCMO is by, for and about veterans. The training to be a trip leader was well organized, effective, and detail-oriented, while at the same time accepting of diverse perspectives, and able to flex around participant needs. Great preparation by solid leaders.

The Sierra Club Military Outdoors Leadership Training was amazing. The staff is dedicated to serving the military and veterans. I went there apprehensive of the training and left with new brothers and sisters. I highly recommend this organization to anyone looking to get more active in the outdoors, or become a leader.

Informative, fun, and interesting training that is at the Vanguard of treating PTSD and Combat-PTSD. The training also offers willing participants effective ways to create new and wonderful memories, while doing beneficial things for good people and the planet.

This program is fantastic. I completed the Outings Leadership Workshop and had a blast. The entire staff was knowledgeable as they were enthusiastic. Just full of beans n' wisdom. Highly recommended to any and all who want to enjoy some educational, non-stressful time in the woods with good people.

The SCMO Outings Leader Certificate program covered not only the details of planning an outing for new leaders, but how to respond to the different needs of a variety of audiences and skill levels, including practice scenarios on how to handle emergencies and group dynamics, and techniques from experts. In addition, it was an amazing opportunity to meet people from a huge variety of veteran resource organizations. A great way to connect!

Sierra Club Military Outdoors offers a rich experience. You only sign up for a hike, but you end up a bit more resilient, healthy and happy. Before you know it, you have acquired new skills, became part of an inclusive community that you interact with on a regular basis, and added a hobby or two to add dimension to one's life. Highly Recommended!

The Outdoor Leadership Training not only provided me with some helpful skills to manage groups in a non-military setting, it also allowed me to network with some amazing organizations. I left the training with many new friends. I highly recommend Sierra Club Military Outdoors.

I went on a train-the-trainer sort of outing with the northeast Military Outdoors program, and it was a few days of easy hikes and classroom activity. I learned a surprising amount, being a pretty active outdoor enthusiast with multiple expeditions and hikes under my belt. A lot was learning how leadership changes with mixed groups (co-ed, mil-civ, etc). as well as wilderness first aid certification and way more. Much of this is applicable to much more than just the outdoor setting, too, which is really interesting because it gives plenty to think about and make me a better leader in different environments. Overall, a very knowledgeable and dedicated staff, some great volunteers, and a really nice setting to spend a few days makes for a great way to volunteer and serve a purpose for myself. Only improvements might be a few more details in the beginning so you know more of what to expect for challenge and activity level. I think a little more education on adaptive hiking and such might be useful, too.
