I would never give an all 5 review, but this is a special case. I've been going to Headstrong for maybe two years now, and I have to say I'm not sure I'd be around if it weren't here. I was really reluctant to get mental health treatment, always looking for other excuses for my anger and lack of sleep and how I relate to others, and a friend or two suggested I just talk to someone at Headstrong. I hated therapists in the Army, and I told them as much during my intake (within 48 hours of contacting them, if I remember right) at Headstrong, and they were understanding and flexible. I kept saying "I don't know if I'll come back next week" and the mental health therapist with my case just said "I hope you do" and you know, that worked. No pressure, no reporting, no nothing. EMDR helped me confront some pretty sticky situations and uncover some other issues I didn't even know I was dealing with. I know therapy carried such a stigma for me, especially with my past experience and really bad therapists, but I can't say enough good things about my treatment at Headstrong. They care, they want to help, and they have the experience and keep learning and striving to do the work to make our lives better. I'm going to keep improving.

The ease of access at Headstrong makes an enormous difference as well as their flexible and understanding attitude. Unlike other organizations I've tried out, they understand folks have a lot going on, and don't penalize or shame against cancellations, reschedules, and several times I've spoken to my therapist on the phone because I can't make it to their office in the Upper East Side. My entry-point to headstrong was incredibly seamless, fast, and private. After being there over a year, I've only interacted with 3 people, which I like. I will say that there have been times with my therapist that I'm unsure that she has a deep understanding of the military and have had to explain further to educate her. What I really like is that unlike other organizations I've been to, my treatment isn't entirely hinged on my military identity and I feel encouraged to talk holistically about other aspects of myself. Similarly there is a great sense of autonomy in my treatment. I dont feel anything pushed on me at all, and it's all what I want. My therapist will suggest or brainstorm avenues of approach, like with EMDR, but there is a strong sense that I am in control and the decision is with me, which is why I've stayed with Headstrong.

The staff here really cares about each individual patient/client. They are all professionals (MSW or above) and they are disconnected from records that might get back to employers who have medical requirements. They are no longer accepting new psychiatry patients (who need medications), or so I was told. This may prove to be a problem for those who can't use the VA for whatever reason, but need these medications. I never wanted to get therapy and pushed it off forever. Since starting at Headstrong a year ago, I've improved in all aspects of my relationships and my work, and I know that it's helping a little bit at a time. I may hate going some days, that's the nature of therapy, but every time is a benefit to me and those around me.

The Headstrong Project is the gold standard by which all other mental health programs should be designed and judged against. I accredit the people there with changing my life, and bringing me back from the brink. About Headstrong and their speciality, mental health, I have nothing bad to say. I do however wish they were integrated with other organizations and brought veteran along to their partner orgs like Hirepurpose for job skills, Task & Purpose for work opportunities, or any of the dozens of orgs they are partnered with. I have tried to get every veteran I know to join or at least make contact with this organization. I cannot speak highly enough of them.

Headstrong is amazing. My spouse goes there 3 times a week and is receiving first rate care. I genuinely don't know what we would do without their help. They offer a number of different types of therapy to veterans - EMDR, CBT, group and probably more. Would be amazing if they could offer their services to veterans of other eras. Currently it is only post 9/11 vets. Also recently they have been trying to get a number of other events going - kayaking/rock climbing etc. While it is great to get vets involved in these activities, I think it would be better if they focused their resources on what they do best - mental health treatment. If they want to get patients involved in other things then perhaps they could fully coordinate with other organizations that focus on sports activities. All the staff are extremely accommodating and skilled.

Every person I met through this organization really cares about veterans. They make you feel like family right away, while at the same time helping you with your issues. I don't have one complaint. None

It provides a fresh perspective on veteran mental care. Everyone I met from this organization were very friendly. They know what they are doing and they are always looking for ways to improve their care. No complaints. None._x000D_n_x000D_n
